The Exhibition - "One Decade on- African Settlement on the Downs

We are getting very close to the exhibition date for our PhotoVoice Project "One Decade On - African Settlement on the Downs". It will be a stunning exhibition with the images taken by photovoice participants being mounted on display stands and others framed in the traditional manner and hung gallery style. There will also be a book which will be available for purchase.

On the night of the opening which is 2 October 2010 at 5.30 pm, we will have entertainment by African performers including musicians and poets and we are all looking forward to the African food. The exhibition will be opened by Allan Bruce and everyone is welcome! The exhibition will be held at the Kath Dickson Community Art Space at 359 Ruthven Street, Toowoomba.

One Dcade On - African Settlement on the Downs

On Saturday 19th June we had our final out shoot for the project with 9 Community Photographers. The morning was spent downloading images before heading to Picnic Point for photographic opportunities and a wonderful Sudanese lunch prepared Monica.

Our next meeting will be to finalse the images for the exhibition and to write captions to accompany the images. This project has provided a wonderful opportunity to meet, to understand more about African Culture and for participants to practice their photography skills.

One Decade on - African Settlement on the Downs

The Primate of the Sudan His Grace, ECS Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul was at St James Church in Toowoomba today to meet and greet community members. In his address the Archbishop covered many topics including the importance of unity within the community both in Australia and in Sudan. His comments were applauded by the largely Sudanese audience. As with many celebrations, there was music, dancing by women and wonderful food. Many of our community photographers were there to record the event and practise their photography skills.

One Decade on - African Settlement on the Downs

During the second session for our African PhotoVoice Project we were very fortunate to be able to attend a pre-wedding event in the Sudanese community. This provided a wonderful opportunity for our participating photographers to practise on location. I am sure the memory cards are full because we needed to keep replenishing the batteries. At the next session on Saturday 8 May, we will be looking forward to seeing wonderful photos celebrating African culture.
