International Women's Day 2011

Soroptimist International (SI) Toowoomba celebrated International Women's Day 2011 with Monica Tiit and Helen Sesay who participated in "One Decade On - African Settlement on the Downs". Although the project formally ceased in November there have been subsequent events with the Zonta Club of Toowoomba Garden City and and now the women from the local branch of SI.

Choosing Pictures for the Exhibition

The exhibition opening is approaching. These images show project participants and project facilitators working together to choose images for display.

The Exhibition - "One Decade on- African Settlement on the Downs

We are getting very close to the exhibition date for our PhotoVoice Project "One Decade On - African Settlement on the Downs". It will be a stunning exhibition with the images taken by photovoice participants being mounted on display stands and others framed in the traditional manner and hung gallery style. There will also be a book which will be available for purchase.

On the night of the opening which is 2 October 2010 at 5.30 pm, we will have entertainment by African performers including musicians and poets and we are all looking forward to the African food. The exhibition will be opened by Allan Bruce and everyone is welcome! The exhibition will be held at the Kath Dickson Community Art Space at 359 Ruthven Street, Toowoomba.

Photovoice at Gatton

On Monday we held our third session in Gatton where we now have 5 community photographers. During the next 3 sessions we will be photographing at the homes of some of the participants and taking a closer look at cooking and food preparation, gathering recipes and photographing men in traditional clothing. We are grateful to the Lockyer Regional Council for sponsoring our venue hire in Gatton.

One Decade on African Settlement on the Downs

Many of our community photographers are keen to photograph and to be photographed with Australian Wildlife. There have been some opportunities recently to photograph Kangaroos at Adora Downs, Black Cockatoos at Grantham and this friendly Kookaburra photographed at Picnic Point by Rio Mansaray.

One Decade On....African Settlement on the Downs

Following our regular session on Saturday which was lots of fun with some very practical sessions and a beautiful lunch provided by Ester, some of us went to the Soccer Carnival. The photographs on this post were taken by Ajak Manyok who is one of the participants in out PhotoVoice group. He done a fantastic job of capturing the action.
